Saint Ignatius High School is no stranger to transfer students, but the experience of moving to a new school varies wildly. The Eye spoke with three students who chose to transfer to Saint Ignatius High School for the 2025-2026 school year to better understand this sometimes overlooked population.
One common reason that students transfer to a new high school is sports. One of the three students, Peyton LaRue ‘28, falls into this category. LaRue attended Saint Edward High School his freshman year before transferring for lacrosse: “There were issues with the lacrosse team and coaching. I wasn’t going to get any better playing at that level, and . . . I wanted to have a chance at playing for a D1 school,” LaRue tells The Eye. Juan Medina ‘27, who transferred for his father’s work, also noted Saint Ignatius sports: “I love the sports here [because they] bring a lot of energy and excitement to the school.” Medina also says that he appreciates “the strong spirit of brotherhood. It makes you feel like you’re part of something bigger than just a school.”
William Massaro ‘26, who transferred after moving to Cleveland from Nashville, also noted the Ignatius brotherhood: “Transferring schools has turned out to be a great opportunity for growth. I’ve definitely become more open and flexible. I have grown in appreciation for the trust the Ignatius brotherhood fosters.” This brotherhood made LaRue’s transition to a new environment very smooth: “I feel there is more team focus, and respect for one another at Ignatius and with my teammates,” also adding that “the coaches are respected, and the knowledge level is no comparison.”
Finally, Massaro spoke about what he has learned from Saint Ignatius High School so far: “We’re all human, and school is a great place to realize how supporting one another goes a long way. Simple acts of kindness have really stood out to me during my experience here.”
