Canned Food Drive

By SAHIL GOSAIN ’11

One of the most successful service programs Ignatius students participate in is the annual Christmas Food Drive.   As Cleveland area families struggle to makes end meet during the current recession, this annual tradition is more important than ever.

According to Feeding America, 1 in 5 Ohio children experienced food insecurity in 2009.   Nearly 22% of all Ohioans now struggle to put food on the table, an increase of 3% since 2007.    In Cuyahoga Country alone, the number of people needing assistance is over 220,000.

Non-perishables, such as rice, pasta, and canned goods collected by the Ignatius community will be placed into baskets and delivered to households throughout the city.   Students assist with sorting, packing, and loading the baskets into a semi-tractor trailer during Christmas in the Community service day on December 14.
